Catan: Pirates & Explorers is the fourth major expansion of Catan, following Seafarers, Cities & Knights, and Traders & Barbarians. It includes five scenarios and three missions. Unlike a standard game of Catan, in Pirates & Explorers, the map consists of three different islands, two of which start the game unexplored.

In this expansion, the citizens of Catan can enjoy a wide variety of gameplay scenarios, all featuring the original element of sailing the seas and exploring new areas (formed by tiles). However, each game mode introduces unique elements that make the gameplay more complex and offer different ways to win.
This expansion uses the base game of Catan as its foundation, along with its rules and objectives. However, it adds a host of additional elements, making the game even more varied. As a result, this expansion typically has a playtime of about 90 minutes.
Pirates & Explorers is an expansion that lets you sail the seas to explore new territories, trade with natives on other islands, discover rich fishing grounds promising great wealth, and even capture pirate hideouts. All these scenarios progressively deepen the game's theme, giving you the option to play as you like or to focus on the scenario of your choice.
