The heron soars over the skies of Himeji while the Daimyo, from high atop the castle, observes his servants below. Gardeners maintain the pond where the koi carp swim, warriors stand guard on the walls, and courtiers cluster at the gates, longing for an audience that brings them closer to the innermost circles of the court.
In The White Castle, players control one of these clans with the goal of accumulating more victory points than their rivals. To achieve this, they must gather influence at the court, manage resources boldly, and place their workers strategically at the right time and place. The game can be enjoyed solo or in a group.
The creators, Sheila Santos and Israel Cendrero, known as the Llama Dice duo who also designed the successful The Red Cathedral and its expansion, Contractors, with Devir, have moved from Ivan the Terrible's Moscow to explore the most formidable fortress in modern Japan, Himeji Castle, where the Sakai clan's banner flies.
The White Castle is a Euro-style game featuring resource management, worker placement, and dice placement mechanics to perform actions. Throughout the game, over three rounds, players will send members of their clan to tend the gardens, defend the castle, or advance socially among the nobility. At game's end, these actions will grant victory points to players.
The central board displays Himeji Castle in all its glory, divided into several areas. The largest is the castle's interior, including the Room of a Thousand Carpets, where courtiers must socially climb to get closer to the Daimyo and gain his favor.
Another important area is the wall and outer castle where warriors patrol and stand guard. Finally, there's the area of the three bridges, where the three types of dice that can be used for actions are accumulated, and each player's personal domain, where they keep track of their resources and worker reserves.
With accessible rules and a well-crafted setting, The White Castle is a versatile title that fits various gaming groups. True to Llama Dice tradition, its elegant design conceals a depth of strategy available to players. Explore the intricacies of the white fortress!
